1. Symmetry is not limited to animals. What everyday objects or other organisms can you identify that show each type of symmetry?
2. How long have modern humans been on Earth? How does this compare to the length of time dinosaurs roamed the earth?
3. In the prairie, the burrowing owl lives in “borrowed” burrows left behind by prairie dogs. The prairie dogs dig the burrows but no longer live in them. What kind of relationship would you call this? Why?
4. Imagine two deer populations. One has a population density of 10 deer per square kilometer. The other has a density of 50 deer per square kilometer. Which population is more likely to be affected by a disturbance such as disease or drought? Explain your answer.
5. An oil tanker spills oil in a harbor. It coats the beaches along the shore and floats in a big pool in the water off the beaches. What kind of changes in populations might occur as a result of this accident? How might it affect the transfer of energy?
6. In an ecosystem, living and nonliving things interact as a community. What living and nonliving things interact in the ecosystem of your backyard?
7. Scientists classify items according to their likenesses. Devise a system of classifying the students in your class, then list who would fall into each group. You must have at least three groups.
8. Predators have to hunt other animals in order to survive. Why do you think predators are viewed as “bad” by many people?
9. What might happen in nature if many of the producers suddenly became consumers?
10. What might happen in nature if many consumers were suddenly able to produce their own food?

This week we are beginning a project on Global Warmimg. After watching the video, An Inconvenient Truth, you will be asked to do an essay stating what YOU believe to be happening with Global Warming. I will give you more information on this on Thursday. Your essay will be due on Feb. 13th.

Monday May 5th homework due Tues May 6th…Heating Fuel Pros and Cons: Talk to an adult in your household to find out what type of fuel heats or cools your home. Then, with that person, list some advantages and disadvantages of that type of fuel. Share what you learned with your classmates (will be done in class on Tues). What fuel source does the majority of students in your class use (will be done in class on Tues.)?

Welcome to Ms. Bell! She is joining us for the last nine weeks as a student teacher from Ohio University. After several weeks of observation and taking on various duties, Ms. Bell will assume full responsibility for the class at the end of April.
This week in science we are beginning Chapter 3 – Environmental Issues.

I apologize that I have not posted in a couple of weeks.
For the week of March 17th, we will be wrapping up the first 3 sections of Chapter 2 and beginning the 4th section on Biomes.
Monday – Quiz on Section 2-3. After the quiz we will begin the Guided Notes for Section 2-4.
Tuesday – Continue Notes on Section 2-4
Wednesday – Chapter Test 2 – This test will cover only Sections 21-, 2-2, and 2-3. Make sure you study your quizzes on these sections. Your test will be taken DIRECTLY from your quizzes. After the test we will be watching a video on Endangered Species.
Thursday – We will complete the video on Endangered Species. There will be no homework assigned over our break.
I will be holding class as normal on Saturday, March 29th. If you are not in class on this day you will be given your work when you return on Monday.

Just a reminder to you that we will have the Section 1-2 Quiz on Friday, Feb. 8th. Make sure you study your notes and your vocabulary.
Some of you have missed the Sleuths because of the flu bug that is going around so here they are:
#1 – What is an ecosystem?
#2 – Define biotic and abiotic. List the 5 abiotic factors.
#3 – List the 4 ways of determining population.
#4 – How does birth rate affect population size?
#5 – What are the 3 limiting factors?
We will be viewing the Power Point for Section 1-3 on Monday and Tuesday. You will be given a “Guided Notes” packet to complete as we view the power point. Vocabulary for Section 1-3 will be given to you on Feb. 8th and is due on Feb. 11th along with the Studying Populations worksheet.
The quiz for Section 1-3 will take place on Thursday, Feb. 14th.
Also we will be doing “Camouflaging Butterflies” on Wednesday and Thursday. More information to come on this.
I will give you back your quizzes on Friday and we will review for the Chapter test to be given on Feb. 19th.
Grades are being updated all the time on engrade so make sure you check often. Remember that in order to access your account you will need the following info….

We are finally wrapping up the Weather and Climate book this week and will be beginning the Environmental Science book on Wednesday. Here are the week’s assignments:
Monday – Last day of review for the Chapter 3 test.
Tuesday – Chapter 3 test. No homework.
Wednesday – Bring your binders to class so we can clean them out and get ready for our new book. I will be giving you the glossary for the Environmental Science book today. Put it in your binder as you will need this to look up your vocabulary words. OAT questions for the week will be handed out and will be due on Friday. Homework tonight : do Chapter 1, Section 1 vocabulary.
Thursday – I will be handing back your Chapter 3 test today. Get them signed for 5 extra credit points to be added to your test score. Read the first section of Chapter 1. Sleuth #1 – What is an ecosystem?
Friday – Turn in signed tests and OAT questions. I will be lecturing over Section 1. Sleuth #2 – What are biotic and abiotic factors? List the 5 abiotic factors. Homework – Worksheet – “Living Things and the Environment” – due Monday.

Due to today’s late start, we were unable to get through the entire review for Chapter 3. Therefore, the test has been moved to Monday, January 28th. Make sure you study! This will be the first test grade for the 3rd nine weeks.

For those of you who have been trying to check this blog, it looks as if we have had some server problems earlier this week. Hopefully everything is up and running again!
This week in science we will be reviewing for the Chapter test. We started the review sheets in class on Friday, January 18th. We will complete them Tuesday when we return and go over them on Wednesday to make sure you have the correct answers. The Chapter 3 test will be on Thursday, January 24. MAKE SURE YOU STUDY!!!!!
Due to the PBS activities on Friday, we will then begin the Environmental Science text on January 28th.
For those of you who have Engrade accounts, you may check for your final science grade online as all grades are now posted.
