Climate Change Project

by pklein in Uncategorized

Climate change – Is it just a hoax or are we, as humans, causing a major warming of our atmosphere?

Climate change (aka Global warming) is in the news almost daily.  But, what exactly is climate change?  And, how is it affecting our planet?  These are questions that I want you to research and then come up with your own opinion on what is happening with our planet’s atmosphere.  Please keep this a scientific paper and support your opinion with scientific evidence.

For this paper you will need to do some research.  We will take one class period to go to the library and you may use any resource to help you find information about Climate Change.  After Christmas break, I will be showing you a documentary on Climate Change which you can also use as a source of information.

Once you have done your research, you will need to write a brief 5 paragraph paper voicing your opinion on Climate Change.

        1.  The first paragraph should be an introduction to your paper stating your opinion on the topic.

        2.  The second paragraph should state exactly what climate change is and what some of the possible causes are.  Also, this paragraph should contain examples of what is currently happening on our planet as a result of climate change. (ex. stronger hurricane seasons, glaciers melting, etc.)

        3.  The third paragraph should discuss what changes, if any, we need to make to prevent climate change from going further. (If you are taking the viewpoint that climate change is a normal cycle then provide evidence how often this occurs and why earth goes through cyclical heating and cooling periods.)

        4.  The fourth paragraph should discuss your opinion on the topic.

         5.  The fifth paragraph is a conclusion.

Requirements:

     1.  5 paragraphs of at least 4-5 sentences.

     2.  Typed (double spaced, size 12 font) or handwritten (black ink, skip every other line)

      3.  Front of paper only.

Periods 1,3,6 – To the library to research Climate Change.  I will give you your information before we go to the library.  Your paper is due no later than January 14th.  Please keep in mind when looking at websites (especially those opposed to climate change) you must be very careful as not all information is accurate and credible.  I have posted the guidelines on here in case you lose yours.

1.  Biomes are large regions of the earth that have characteristic plant and animal life.  Deserts, rainforests, grasslands, and tundras are examples of biomes.  Choose one of these and describe 2 plants and 2 animals which live there.

2.  How might desert plants and animals be different from those found in the tropical rainforest?

3.  Some kinds of plants and animals are in danger of becoming extinct.  This is largely due to people taking over the natural living space of these plants and animals.  What are some possible solutions to this problem of extinction?

4.  Conservation is the wise use of natural resources.  Think of 5 ways you can help conserve natural resources.

5.  Many of our natural resources, such as coal and oil, will run out someday.  What sources of energy do you think might be harnessed or invented in the future?  Explain

6.  If the President asked you to be the leader of a new anti-pollution campaign, what specific issues would you stress in your effort?

7.  Having too many people on the earth could someday be a threat.  Fresh water, food supplies, and other natural resources could run out.  How might overpopulation of the earth be prevented?

8.  If your town or city were running out of energy, would you want the local government to install a nuclear power plant?  Support your answer with at least 3 reasons.

9.  Scientists use observation to make discoveries.  Take a few moments to study your pen or pencil.  Describe some of the things you observe about it.  What characteristics of the pen or pencil would allow you to pick it out of a group of others similar to it?

10.  Evaluate this class.  Name 2 things you liked this year and 2 things you didn’t like.
