More Multi-Genre Help!!
We have spent the past few weeks researching and collecting information for our Multi-Genre Projects. I have some more informational help for everyone. First, HERE is a link to the rubric. This will help to remind you of exactly how you will be graded.
HERE is a link to the assignment that will be due this Friday. I want you to be able to see what your writing should look like.
Some of you are still confused on perhaps how to “package” your project. We will review some more techniques this week, but here is an example of what someone in the past has done.
My topic for the Multi-Genre Research Project was Elvis Presley. I am going to put all of my different genres in a guitar case. Inside the case, it will be decorated in zebra prints and flashy colors to symbolize Elvis’s unique flair that would he brought to his family and fans. The leather material outside is going to have stickers of his albums that he sold. I want the viewers of my presentation to feel like I know who the “King of Rock and Roll” is.
Elvis had a unique sense of taste that made many of his cooks very busy. I would like make a little recipe book of his favorite foods. It would call it A Recipe to Elvis’s Heart. The book would include recipes, interesting facts, and pictures. When I was doing my research, I came across a book that showed many grocery lists. I would tell a little about his kitchen, cooks in Graceland, and include a detailed list of groceries he would need.
During his career and childhood, he took many pictures. There would be personal notes under each picture. I am going to choose a person very close to Elvis to make the notes. Another genre that I am going to use is an obituary in a newspaper article of his death. I will tell some of the things that took part in his death.
Since he was a singer, I want to make a CD of all of his popular songs. I will make the CD, with a decorated cover. Inside the case, there will be information about the song and trivia. Since Graceland is such a huge attraction, I want to make a brochure. The brochure will be colorful, vibrant, and full of interesting facts that will make people want to visit Graceland.
The Final Instructions
The “Must Have’s”:
You may choose any number of genres [but at least seven - two of them have to be non-fiction (one of which is the research essay); one has to be a type of technical writing to tell the story of your subject. Some of these genres you have studied before— this year or in previous years. You have, for instance, learned the proper form for a business letter; many of you have written haiku poems or sonnets; and all of you have listened to radio broadcasts and seen play scripts.
Your entire paper should be at least 1,500 words in length and will be turned in as a paper.
Information about your subject should not be repeated in several pieces. For instance, do not write an encyclopedia-type entry with all the major facts about your subject and then present the same information in various creative pieces. We should learn new things about your topic with each piece of writing. The only exception to this is the research essay. The information in it does not count toward this “rule.”
The pieces you create should be arranged in some logical order. The research essay should be first. It serves as your “introduction” to the topic.
You’ll organize all of your genres and put it in a topic-appropriate package.
You are expected to present your proect as well. This is a major requirement. I will be blocking off 10-15 minute time periods for presentations. See the calendar for details on when to sign up for your presentation time.
I have a few more examples for you. I have a research essay exampleand a project example.
I hope this information helps you to put your project together. We are not using class time this week, so be sure to use all out of class time creatively and wisely!!
If you need any help, email me or leave me a message on the blog.

I had a couple questions.
-do we need a biblography for the WHOLE project ?
-do names (mine) and numbers count in the word count?
- on the thing due fri. can i just give you what i have and then when my project is finished give you the final one?
-does the cover page count in the word count?
Thanks
Drew
DREW - YES YOU DO NEED A BIBLIOGRAPHY FOR THE WHOLE PROJECT. YOUR INFORMATION CAME FROM SOMEWHERE - SO WE NEED THAT.
NAMES AND NUMBERS DO NOT COUNT.
WHAT WOULD THERE BE A COVER PAGE ON??
ON FRIDAY YOU ARE TO TURN IN WHAT YOU HAVE.

Oh, and do notes count on the word count.
NOTES DO NOT COUNT UNLESS YOU ARE USING THEM AS A GENRE OF WRITING. OTHERWISE THEY ARE NOT PART OF YOUR PROJECT JUST PREP. NOTES.

I have a question. I know you said that information can’t repeat unless it repeats in the research essay but i was wondering if it could repeat if you were doing a timeline. Not all the information, but if you have a date and what happened on that date in another piece of writing could it also be on the timeline or are you not allowed to do that?
Thanks,
Nikki

NIKKI,
THAT WOULD BE OKAY. AS LONG AS YOU DO NOT GO INTO DETAIL ON THE TIMELINE. I ASSUME YOU WILL BE GOING INTO DETAIL ON THE OTHER PIECE? SEE YOU TUESDAY!

Mrs. Loughrige,
I have one other question. Is a protest letter a technical writing? And if not do you have any ideas of a different technical writing that i could do? My project is on the children of thalidomide.
Thanks,
Nikki
NIKKI,
YES, THAT WOULD BE PERFECT!! I CAN’T WAIT TO SEE YOUR PRESENTATION. YOU PICKED A GOOD TOPIC - I THINK IT’S IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER THAT GROUP OF CHILDREN.

Mrs. L I don’t have very much research on my project and I won’t have the whole thing done by tomorrow. I went to the library and got some books to read about James Dean. So my whole question is how much longer do i have? Also i have a great ideah for one of my genres. I don’t know if it works or not but what i was going to do was take a DVD case and put like the title (James Dean) on the front and put some facts about Jeames Dean on the back.
Thanks,
Tyler

TYLER,
I AM GOING TO MOVE YOU TO NEXT WEEK. YOU NEED MORE TIME TO PUT TOGETHER A QUALITY PROJECT AND I DO NOT WANT TO TAKE THAT AWAY FROM YOU. YOUR PACKAGING IDEA SOUNDS AWESOME. I THINK THAT WOULD BE FITTING BECAUSE HE WAS AN ACTOR. PLAN ON GOING THE LAST DAY.

Mrs. L i dont think i will have over 1500 words but i looked at the rubric and i will probably end up in the 4 point spot in the word count. But that is no problem. I need to know my sign up spot for the outline. Also today i wanted to ask you some questions on the research essay. I’m not quite sure what to put in it but i have already done a few items. Lastly i wanted to ask you if im right:
Recipe-Technical
Research essay-nonfiction
News Article-fiction
Wanted poster-fiction
Tombstone-fiction
Timeline-nonfiction
DVD-fiction
i wasnt quite sure if i was right on this
Thanks,
Tyler
