Good Luck Althetes!

by Mr. Hugus in LEHS Woodshop

Happy Friday Morning!  I enjoyed my half-day off yesterday.  I attended my son’s Renaissance Assembly at Circleville High School.  I congratulate him on his academic achievement.  I also enjoyed having a leasurely breakfast and coffee with my wife.  That was a rare treat.  For those of you with children you will understand this.

I would like to say GOOD LUCK to the Logan Elm athletes performing today.

Shane Gifford won his first match at the State Wrestling Tournament last night 9-4. He will wrestle again this morning.  Good luck to him!

The boys’ basketball team will play against Sheridan tonight at The Convo in Athens at 6:15.  Good luck to them!

Good luck to the band for their weekend performance at Teays Valley!

Woods I students learned about the planer/surfacer yesterday and will be taking the quiz on it this morning.  We will be planing their boards and sanding them over the next two days and then onto the Band Saw.

Woods I students are doing a blade-changing activity on the Table Saw this week.  I have seen many quality cutting boards and pizza peels come across my desk in the past few days.  The students have worked hard to fine tune these and get them ready for a mineral oil finish.

Everyone have a great weekend!

Special notes this week…

     * Late Start Wednesday tomorrow.

     * Parent Teacher Conferences Thursday after school.   3:00 – 6:00 pm

I am continuing to get more completed projects to grade.  About 80-90% of the bird houses have been turned in and graded.   About 1/2 of the cutting boards have been turned in and graded.  I will continue to take photos of as many as possible and place them here.

In the Advanced classes there are several interesting and unique projects being produced right now: fishing pole racks, end tables, cedar chests, hope chests, chess boards and matching chess pieces, patio furniture, etc.  I will also post photos of these as them are completed.  Many of these are extensive projects that may not get done until the end of the course.  Keep reading my posts to see them as they are done.

Woods II Projects

by Mr. Hugus in LEHS Woodshop

The Woods II students this semester are working on two projects at a time.  They each have an independent project and a required project.  The required project may be either a cutting board, clip board or pizza peel.  Between the two Woods II classes there will be a total of 35 of these being made this grade period.

The students’ individual projects range from chess boards and chess pieces to end tables to fishing pole racks to cedar chests.  They have a wide vaviety of projects planned this semester and many of them are fairly detailed projects.  I look forward to seeing some fine finished projects at the end of the semester.  Keep looking here for some photos as they get done.

The following pictures are my samples of the required projects.  I have made these to show an example of what can be done as far as variety, detail and quality of workmanship to be expected.

Good Morning!  Nice day today, but very cold.  It is a fine day for woodworking.  I am currently reworking my handouts in effort to reduce my use of the copy machine.  I am trying to minimize the handouts the students get to keep and just use a classroom copy.  This will require the students to use more notebook paper.

Here are a few more finished bird houses and cutting boards …. maybe a few pizza peels as well.

Student Projects from Second Semester

by Mr. Hugus in LEHS Woodshop

The Woods I students are wrapping up their Eastern Blue Bird Houses and will be starting their clock projects on Monday next week.

The Woods II students are pulling double duty working on their required projects and individual projects at the same time.  The required project may be either a cutting board, clip board or pizza peel.  I have expanded this project to include the clip board and pizza peel to add some variety and to work in some more of the short pieces of stock building up in the storage room.

Onward and upward…

I donated my 40th pint of blood in January.  That gives me 5 gallons!   I believe Logan Elm HS will host another Blood Drive this spring.  I am not sure of any details.  We donated 64 pints at the Blood Drive in the fall.  I think we should shoot to top that number.

Got to go…

Back at it again.

by Mr. Hugus in LEHS Woodshop

I am back at it again.  Trying to put something worthwhile on my woodshop blog.  I have not taken the opportunity to write in a long while.  I believe my last post was November 2008.  I have begun to take more photos of completed projects from the second semester classes.  I will try to display them here periodically.  I want people to see the fine work that the students have been producing in our woodshop.

 Onward and upward….

The Circleville Tigers lost to Miami Trace last night 54-50, so that means our Logan Elm Braves will face Miami Trace on Saturday at 3:00 pm.

Short Week!

by Mr. Hugus in LEHS Woodshop

I am back after taking Friday off for my Birthday.

I donated my 39th pint of blood last week at the blood drive.  I believe the Red Cross collected 64 pints of blood.  Good job to all those who participated and to those who helped make it a smooth process.  To all those who struggled with their first time donating, giving blood gets much easier after your first time.

It is going to be a short week this week.  We have school only on Monday and Tuesday.

School work for this week:

Mechanical Drawing:  Complete last week’s drawings, 128-12 2-pt perspective and tool support 2-pt perspective.

Tomorrow: 128-12  hole only, 2-pt perspective.

Woods I, II, III, IV:  project work.  Chapter 10 & 11 if you were not here Friday,  project work for the rest of the week.  Let’s keep making progress on our projects!
